Mojacar
Mojacar is an ancient village in a privileged
location: perched on the lower slopes of the Sierra Cabrera
mountains, overlooking the Mediterranean coastline of the Costa
de Almeria and 98 kilometres from the main city of Almeria.
It has been inhabited by many different cultures throughout
history. Currently popular as a prime Mediterranean tourist
resort, the surrounding area offers much more.
With its privileged location, Mojacar village
is visible from many miles away; distinctive whitewashed sugar
cube houses stacked one upon another separated by twisting cobbled
streets, winding steps and old arches. Restaurants, bars and
craft shops lay waiting to be discovered along with the hospitality
of the friendly locals. Other towns in the region each provide
unique attractions: panoramic views, rich geology, traditional
farming and artisan, fiestas and a diverse gastronomy.
The ancient village has been restored carefully
over the past few decades. Features of historical interest remain
in its architecture: the fountain, the old city walls and its
"puertas" (gates). Restaurants, bars and craft shops
lay waiting to be discovered along with the hospitality of the
friendly locals.
In the summer the Mojacar area attracts
visitors from all over the globe and is undoubtedly the most
cosmopolitan place in the whole region. Its bars stay open until
the early hours every night. Parking in the village becomes
very difficult but a new multi purpose building is being developed
to alleviate this problem. In the winter the village is quieter,
although the country life and the village bars and restaurants
sustain a pleasant and charming atmosphere.
Mojacar Playa consists of over 5 km of bars,
hotels, restaurants, shops and cafes. 50% of the population
is non-Spanish and over 50 years old. This demography has affected
the culture of Mojacar Playa. Gone are the few simple beach
bars and hotels. The beach now boasts several English supermarkets
and businesses. A new paseo (walkway) runs a third of the length
of the beach. The atmosphere, once considered bohemian, is now
more cosmopolitan with many people bringing their culture and
talents to work and live in this area.

During the summer months the beach
is crowded, but much less so than most other coastal resorts
in Spain. For those seeking quieter and more natural surroundings,
there are still 11km of virgin beaches extending towards the
protected Cabo de Gata natural park, currently being changed
irrevocably by developers. The developments of Marina Playa
and Macenas Playa are adding thousands of homes to the area.
